The USS Irex SS-482: For Sail

By H. Charles Hall QMC (SS),
U.S.S. Irex (482) Newsletter, Vol. 12-1, March 2006, p. 12

During my tour on the USS JOHN MARSHALL (SSBN 611), I told them that I wanted to go back to fleet boats or I was going to get out. They didn't believe me until two weeks before my enlistment was up. They sent me to IREX in November, 1968, and we left for the Med shortly thereafter. While there we received the message to return to NLon for decommissioning. We came up the Thames with a “FOR SAIL” sign on the side and a 20 ft weather balloon trailing behind. I was a QMC(SS) and they made me the Navigator because they transferred most of the officers. I left IREX in September, 1969, and took a USS IREX sign board with me.
